If you've trained here, you've spent the first ten minutes of every session doing something that looks, to an outside observer, deeply unimpressive. Slow rotations. One joint at a time. No weight, no music cue, no sweat.
Clients ask about it. Fair enough — you're paying for an hour and the first sixth of it looks like nothing. So here is what's actually happening.
The definition
A Controlled Articular Rotation is the largest circle a single joint can make under its own power, with the rest of the body actively resisting the urge to help.
Three words in that sentence carry the weight:
- Single. One joint moves. If you're doing a shoulder CAR and your ribcage is rotating with it, you're no longer measuring the shoulder.
- Own power. No momentum, no swing, no other hand pushing. If the range only appears when something else supplies the force, it isn't yours yet.
- Largest. Not comfortable. The outer edge of what you can actively control, which is a different and usually smaller place than where someone could push you.
Why speed ruins it
Momentum is a loophole. Move a limb fast enough and it will travel through ranges your nervous system has no control over — you're throwing it, and gravity and inertia carry it the rest of the way. The circle looks bigger. Nothing has been trained.
Slow it down and the loophole closes. The parts of the range you actually own stay smooth. The parts you don't own show up immediately: a stutter, a shake, a place where the limb wants to jump ahead. That stutter is the entire point. It's information you can't get any other way, and it's the thing we're going to work on.
Most people's first honest CAR takes about sixty seconds per joint and is noticeably harder than they expected. That's normal, and it's a better result than a fast one that looks clean.
Active range versus passive range
Reach overhead. Now have someone gently push your arm further. That extra distance is passive range — territory your joint can occupy, but can't get to or hold on its own.
The gap between what you can reach unassisted and what you can be moved into is, in a lot of people, where problems live. It's unguarded territory: a position your body can end up in during a real-world moment, without the strength or control to manage being there. Stretching tends to widen that gap. Training active range narrows it.

The second job CARs do
Beyond training, CARs are a daily readout. You do the same rotations often enough that you know what they normally feel like — and then one morning the left hip catches somewhere it didn't last week.
That's useful before a session rather than after. It changes what we load that day. A client who can articulate "my right shoulder feels different at the top today" is giving me better information than any wearable will.
How to do them badly
The four most common ways I see CARs go wrong:
- Too fast. Covered above. If it takes you fifteen seconds, it's a warm-up, not a CAR.
- Letting the trunk help. Brace hard. The whole body should be tense while the one joint moves freely.
- Chasing range that isn't there. The goal is the edge of control, not the edge of possibility. Going past it trains nothing and can aggravate things.
- Doing them only when something hurts. They work as maintenance. Reaching for them only in a flare-up is like checking the oil after the engine light comes on.
Where to start
If you want to try one thing: pick your shoulder. Stand tall, brace your midsection like someone's about to shove you, and take one slow circle — sixty seconds, no momentum, nothing else moving. Notice where it gets rough.
